A Scanner Darkly
by Philip K Dick
It’s so easy to forget how old this book is when you’re reading - it’s damn good and feels modern, from the culture to the language. It draws you in spiral-style into a warped and genuinely frightening world that scratches at the bone of drug culture. There’s no glorification or overt ‘drugs are bad, fool’ message - it simply lays the effects and lifestyle down as they are. The attention to detail in the trips is uncanny and very clearly lifted from reality. You can’t fake an argument over six ‘lost’ gears on a bike.
Oh, and the ending. Fantastic and terrible. I really regret that I saw the film before I got around to reading the novel, though the adaptation is brilliant. From the book I can see why the producers went with the rotoscoping style and how damn effective it is.
Okay, it’s short, but really what else is there to say about this book that hasn’t already been said (and far more eloquently, too)?
